Mr. Scott Matthews
Scott Matthews is a native of Bamberg, South Carolina and he received a music scholarship to attend Lander University in Greenwood, South Carolina in 1989. Mr. Matthews majored in music education where he performed as the principal percussionist with the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band and Pep Band for four years. He also was a member of the Lander Singers, the primary choir for the University. While studying music, he began to develop a deep passion for teaching.
After graduating from Lander University with a Bachelor of Music Education degree in 1994, Mr. Matthews began his teaching career in the Greenville County School District. He successfully served as the director of bands at League Academy of the Communication Arts and Wade Hampton High School. He was responsible for the entire middle and high school band programs at both schools serving students in grades 6-12. In 2000, Mr. Matthews was hired by the Charleston County School District as the Director of Bands at Fort Johnson Middle School. He successfully served as the band director for grades 6-8 and was the assistant director of bands at James Island Charter High School. He also taught middle school chorus at Fort Johnson Middle School and was named the assistant director of the Charleston Youth Symphony Orchestra. After ten years of teaching music, Mr. Matthews began to develop another passion in the area of leadership. He furthered his studies by attending The Citadel graduate school and earned a Master of Education in Education Leadership in 2005.
Mr. Matthews has served as a school level administrator for the past thirteen years in Dorchester School District Four, the School District of Colleton County, and Dorchester School District Two. He is currently entering his 7th year as principal of River Oaks Middle School where he has worked to create an environment where all students are expected to grow and achieve academically, socially, and emotionally in order to be productive citizens and successful in life. Mr. Matthews is married to Terri Matthews and has one twelve year old son, Brooks.
