Mr. Wayne Helmly
Wayne Helmly has served as a teacher, collaborative pianist, and an Episcopal Church organist/choirmaster for over twenty years. He is honored to join the Rollings faculty as the Director of Piano Studies and a music exploratory teacher after teaching fifteen years at DuBose Middle School. In 2007 and again in 2010 a Dorchester Two District Honor Teacher. He has twice been Teacher of the Year.
Mr. Helmly’s purpose is to serve students, helping them to know that they are valuable and worthy. He uses the piano and self-expression as his means of doing that. He strives to make piano study relevant to real life, maintains high expectations for his students, and highly values and honors the diversity that he enjoys seeing in his students.
He is also the Organist-Choirmaster at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Charleston. St. Stephen’s, “The First Free Church in America,” is known throughout the city for its commitment to social justice, and the choir figures prominently in that vision.
He has served as pianist for such notable artists as Muriel Costa-Greenspon, Robert Shaw, John Rutter, Paula Robison, Sandra Willetts and Joseph Gramley. He has also served as a master class pianist for Midori, William Fred Scott, Lindsay Christiansen, Hal Hopson, among others.
