Mrs. Leslie Freke
My mother would tell you that I was a born teacher. Some of my earliest memories are of playing school and imitating my grandmother who taught kindergarten and served as my inspiration. My younger sister played the role as my only student and I taught her to read when she was 3 years old. I did not, however, choose education as my first profession. Prior to being an educator, I served as a docent at the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon, a Physician Liaison for Aetna/US Healthcare, a Unit Secretary in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at Roper Hospital, a Shag instructor, a flute instructor, a guide for kayak tours on the Ashepoo River, a waitress, and a landscaper. I even had a brief stint as an actress with a summer job as a featured dancer in the movie "Shag".
Eventually, I came full-circle and embraced my fate. Currently, I am in my 20th year of teaching History. I earned an undergraduate degree in Psychology from the College of Charleston and a Masters of Arts in Teaching in Secondary Social Studies from The Citadel. During my career, I have taught 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 11th grades and have worked at three different schools. While at Gregg, I have been a sponsor of the Beta Club, the Robotics Club, and the Level I and II Social Studies Quest teams. In my spare time, I enjoy travelling the world in search of my next adventure.
I am extremely fortunate to have travelled extensively and to have visited many of the places that are discussed in this curriculum. I enjoy using my personal experiences to enrich the students' learning.
