Coach's Handbook 2026-2027

All coaches must maintain current certifications and upload documentation to Planet High School (or district-designated platform), including:

• CPR/AED & First Aid (AHA or Red Cross)
• Background check & fingerprinting (DD2)
• Adult Sexual Misconduct Training (SCHSL)
• Concussion Awareness Training (SCHSL)
• Sudden Cardiac Arrest Training (SCHSL)
• Sport-specific rules clinic completion

• Head coaches schedule varsity and sub-varsity contests.
• All schedules require approval by the Athletic Director and Principal prior to finalization.
• Written contracts are required for football and strongly recommended for all sports.

SCHSL Scheduling Guidelines

• Sport budgets are determined annually based on revenue and district support.
• All purchases must align with the approved spending plan.
• Fundraising activities require prior approval and must follow district accounting procedures.

Booster club coordination must occur through the Athletic Director.

All athletic purchases must:

• Be submitted via an approved Purchase Request Form
• Receive Athletic Director and District Athletic Director approval
• Be processed through the Athletic Administrative Assistant

Coaches are prohibited from independently purchasing or obligating district funds.

• All team travel must use district-approved transportation.
• A DD2 employee must accompany athletes on all trips.
• Travel exceptions require prior approval and parental authorization.

SCHSL Travel & Supervision Guidelines

Athletic facilities are controlled by DD2 and scheduled through the Athletic Director. Coaches are responsible for:

• Proper supervision of athletes
• Care and security of facilities and equipment
• Returning keys and equipment upon separation from coaching duties

Coaches must provide written team rules addressing:

• Attendance and punctuality
• Academic expectations
• Discipline and conduct
• Lettering criteria
• Communication procedures

Signed acknowledgments must be kept on file and provided to the Athletic Director.

Coaches are expected to:

• Model exemplary sportsmanship
• Teach respect for officials and opponents
• Enforce bench conduct and altercation rules

SCHSL Sportsmanship Policy

Violations may result in SCHSL penalties and district disciplinary action.

• Coaches must follow HIPAA regulations regarding student-athlete injuries.
• Injury information may not be shared without written parental consent.

SCHSL Medical Policies

• Coaches are evaluated annually by the Athletic Director.
• Evaluations inform recommendations for renewal and assignment.
• Coaching supplements are approved annually by the Board of Trustees.

All camps, summer leagues, and out-of-season activities must:

• Comply with SCHSL regulations
• Receive Athletic Director and Principal approval
• Obtain district approval for overnight or out-of-town travel

SCHSL Out-of-Season Rules

Each coach is responsible for completing the following prior to the season:

• Sport-specific SCHSL Rules Clinic
• CPR / AED / First Aid Certification (AHA or Red Cross)
• Concussion Protocol Certification
• Sudden Cardiac Arrest Training
• Adult Sexual Misconduct Training
• Background Check & Fingerprinting (DD2)
• Eligibility & Roster Submission
• Emergency Action Plan review
• Team Rules & Athlete Acknowledgments submitted

Documentation must be uploaded to the district-designated platform.

Coaches must ensure:

• All public statements align with district messaging
• Social media use reflects professionalism
• School logos, uniforms, and branding follow district standards
