DD2 Names Elementary Alternative Program Principal

The Board of Trustees met on May 11, 2026 to approve Ms. Melissa Mitchum as the Elementary Alternative Program Principal for the 2026-2027 school year.

Ms. Mitchum, who currently serves as Assistant Principal at William Reeves, Jr. Elementary School since 2021, has 26 years of experience in education. Her previous roles have included Assistant Principal Intern at William Reeves, Jr. Elementary School, Instructional Technology Specialist for Dorchester School District Two, and 8th grade Science, Math, and Social Studies Teacher at Alston Middle School.

A graduate of the University of South Carolina, Ms. Mitchum earned a Bachelor of Science in Retail Management in 1997. She later earned a Master of Arts in Teaching in Early Education from University of Charleston in 2000, followed by a Masters in Elementary Administration from the University of South Carolina in 2007.

“I am honored to be selected to lead the Elementary Alternative Program in DDTwo,” said Ms. Mitchum. “This program will provide an opportunity for collaboration among all elementary schools regarding strategies to help every child find their path to success.”

Outside of school, Ms. Mitchum enjoys spending quality time with her husband, son, and their dogs. In her free time, she loves being out on the boat or cheering on the Gamecocks whenever she gets the chance.
