A Brief History of the Program
Founded in 2009, the Green Wave Steel Band was the second steel band formed in Dorchester District Two as a result of the vision of superintendant Joseph Pye and Fine Arts Director Larry Barnfield. Under the guidance of director Michael Greer, instruments were acquired and the band grew in numbers and accolades. Highlights of this early period include performing at Pops in the Park at Boone Hall Plantation and receiving a silver rating at the Virginia Arts International PANFest.
In 2012, John Willmarth began his tenure as the Director of Steel Bands. The band completed their first recording in 2013 featuring student compositions. Also in 2013, the combo group was formed. Dedicated to performing in smaller venues, the combo has performed at countless events and establishments throughout the community. The combo remains active performing several times each year.
Beginning in 2014, the band began performing more frequently in larger events and festivals. Highlights of this period include the North Charleston Arts Festival finale concert (2014-16), the Virginia Arts International PANFest (2015-16), and a joint concert with Coastal Carolina University in 2017.
The Steel Festival at the South Carolina Day of Percussion was founded in 2015. Since its inception, the Green Wave Steel Band has participated each year earning straight Superior ratings.
Caribbean Night, established in 2017, is an annual dinner concert featuring the SHS Culinary Department and the GWSB. In 2018 the event featured guest artist Liam Teague. The band closed out 2018 with an invitation to perform at the finale of the Piccolo Spoleto Rising Stars concert series whose mission is to highlight artistically gifted students.
The band has appeared with many great artists over its history including: Tracy Thornton, Kayleen Justus, Mat Britain, Gregg Bissonette, Jason Koontz, Jesse Willis, Joe Galvin, Rich Redmond, Victor Provost, and Liam Teague.
The Green Wave Steel Band currently includes 6 bands and over 130 students. This year marks the band's 10th anniversary! To celebrate, the band will be performing throughout the year with pan superstars Tracy Thornton, Victor Provost and Andy Narell.
