All English language (EL) students are placed into an ESOL class based on a language screener (WIDA) and/or their ACCESS for ELLs scores.
After students take the WIDA screener, they will take the ACCESS for ELLs language assessment in February. This test measures the student’s language ability in the following five domains: listening, reading, speaking and writing. Once the student has reached an overall score of a 4.4 and a 4 in each domain; they will exit from the ESOL program and be monitored for four years.
In our class, we will focus on the WIDA English Language Development (ELD) Standards. The standards are listed in the following graphic:
Students are graded on participation along with classwork. Students will also create class projects, take quizzes, and take tests. It is essential that each student participate in each class. Speaking and taking risks with language are a big part of ESOL. The charts below show how each assignment is weighted along with the district grading scale.
I look forward to working with all of you this year! Please let me know if you have any questions!
