Welcome to Response to Intervention! |
|
Response to Intervention (RTI) is a system designed to work with children who are struggling with reading. It provides research based interventions to help children build the skills necessary to insure a strong foundation in early reading skills. The RTI Interventionist is able to intervene early to meet the needs of struggling learners. The interventionist focuses on the skills needed to be a successful reader. These skills include: phonemic awareness (the ability to HEAR sounds and patterns in words), phonics (the ability to identify and read sounds and patterns in words) and fluency (the ability to read smoothly, automatically, and with expression). Students in K-3 are tested with the DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) assessment. Students are selected for RTI assistance based on the results of the DIBELS test. Students who do receive RTI services are progress monitored every two weeks to make sure that they are responding to interventions. If the students fail to show significantly improved academic skills, despite several well-designed and implement interventions, the student may be referred to the school SST team for further evaluation. |

Ways to help your child at home: |
|
When in the car, sing the ABC song, say the letters in his/her name, say words that begin with b, etc.
Play “I Spy” with letters on cereal boxes, in the newspaper, etc.
Ask your child to tell you the beginning sounds in words.
Read with/to your child EVERY night. It is very important that they receive constant exposure to literature.
