About the Teacher

Mrs. Harlow

I grew in Summerville, and I was actually a student at SES!  After graduating from Summerville High School, I attended Presbyterian College where I majored in Elementary Education.  I began my teaching career at Newington Elementary where I taught fourth grade.  I have also taught sixth grade at AMS, and was a fifth grade teacher at BHES here in Summerville.   During this time, I received a Master’s Degree in School Counseling from The Citadel.  I was a guidance counselor at BHES before coming to teach at SES.

Fifth grade is my most favorite grade to teach.  I feel that the students are still young enough to “love” their teachers, but old enough to know what is going on in the world.  They are beginning to become independent, and this is exciting to me.

My philosophy of education is that students do not care what you know, until they know that you care.  Creating a relationship of mutual respect is so very important, especially when dealing with older elementary students.

My husband, Brooks, is an assistant principal at Summerville High, and my daughters are both students here at SES.  Mary Baxter, my oldest daughter, is a fifth grader, and Isabel is a second grader.  I feel very lucky that I am able to bring my children to work with me.

I look forward to working with both you and your child.  I hope to have a fun and successful year.
