8th Grade Social Studies 2007-2008 South Carolina and United States History
Welcome to South Carolina History. This year we are going to study South Carolina History with United States History as a background. We will be learning the story of South Carolina as the people, events, time, place, and circumstances interact with each other.
Our trip through history will begin with the exploration of South Carolina and the United States by Europeans and their encounters with the Native Americans and continue chronologically through the 18th, 19th, and 20th Centuries. It will end with a look at South Carolina and her place in the 21st Century.
6. SC/US History Units: these will include “Interactive Notebook/Output Sheets” and “Teacher directed information/Input sheets”. 7. A Mystery Question section. These are research questions that are due weekly.
Student Guidelines When graded? Student Interactive Notebooks will be graded informally (through observation) on a daily basis. They will be graded formally at least once a quarter through quizzes and checklists. Individual assignments such as RAP activities and Mystery Questions, etc will be collected for grading and returned for inclusion in the Interactive Notebook. Remember you are responsible for all work due to absence (graded and nongraded). Upon completion of work after an absence, it is your responsibility to turn it in to me for grading. Failure to this will result in loss of points.
Grading Criteria: The Interactive Notebooks will be graded on the basis of completeness and organization. Individual learning activities will be graded on the basis of criteria established specifically for those activities. Grading Policy: I use a point system for grading, not a weighted system. Each activity/assignment will be assigned point values based on the criteria for the specific activity. Points can range from 1 – 200 points. A student who expects to earn an “A” or higher on the notebook will be one who has taken the time to consistently be well-organized.
What happens if I am Absent? If you are absent, it is your responsibility to see the Assignment Notebook or check with your classroom buddy to get notes, etc. that you missed. Check the absentee boxes for handouts and returned papers. Remember you are responsible for all work missed during an absence. Don’t forget to turn it in to me!
What if I lose my notebook? If you lose your notebook, let me know as soon as possible so I can post it. Check all of your classes and the lost and found in the office. Bring a spare notebook to class to use. Do not just quit! Hopefully the notebook will be found. The notebook is really important to your grade. Set up a time with me after a week of looking for the lost notebook and we can determine how to make up the work.
Parents/Guardians: How do you know how your child is doing in South Carolina History? There are several ways to find out how your student is doing. You can check Intouch; I update grades on a regular basis. Also, your student will be expected to share their notebook with you daily or weekly. Sharing should consist of the student and interested party sitting down, reading, and discussing their work for a short period of time. The emphasis is on the student initiating the conversation, though it would be helpful if you would inquire. (Note to Students: This is not opportunity for your parents/guardians to do your work, but a time to share what is completed or give assistance.) I know I am asking quite a bit from both of you, but with this line of communication open I believe the student can only succeed. Please read their work, especially the interactive/output activities, since this is the collection of how your student comprehends SC and US History. Please use this as a chance to communicate with me. Write a note and have your student give it to me the next day or Email me at jcanaday@dorchester2.k12.sc.us. |
