International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme

Fort Dorchester High School

IB Hexagon at FDHS

The IB hexagon, pictured below, represents the course of study followed by IB students in their junior and senior years.  FDHS students study three subjects at higher level and three subjects at standard level.  English, History of the Americas, mathematics, Spanish and biology are offered at the higher level.  Standard level offerings include psychology, mathematics, math studies, chemistry, visual arts, music, Spanish, German, French, and Latin.

At the center of the hexagon are the Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay, and the Creativity, Action, and Service program.  Theory of Knowledge is taught by a team of IB teachers, along with guest speakers, on Fridays during the English/History two-period block.  Students have the opportunity to pull together their knowledge from all sides of the hexagon and discuss how we learn and process information.

In addition, students will write an Extended Essay with the assistance of a faculty mentor and complete the Creativity, Action, and Service program to qualify for the prestigious IB diploma.
