RATIONALE

Traditionally, the guidance program at Dorchester School District Two has focused on providing responsive services to students, parents, and staff members.  In today’s increasingly complex society, students face more personal and social problems than ever before.  Escalating divorce rates, less supervision, increased cases of teen pregnancy, greater crime and changing career demands are just a few of the problems today's high school students encounter.  Given the task of helping all students develop effective coping skills, Dorchester School District Two counselors believe that a proactive, comprehensive guidance program best addresses students’ needs.

A standards-based comprehensive guidance program allows guidance counselors at Fort Dorchester High School to reach more students with more information through a planned program designed to meet their needs.  By increasing visibility in structured small groups, in the classroom, and by sponsoring school-side information opportunities, counselors serve those students who might not request individual appointments.  The comprehensive guidance program at Fort Dorchester High School addresses students’ needs and provides parents and faculty members with increased support services.
