DIBELS

What is it?

The letters stand for Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills. It is an assessment that is given three times a year to help identify students who may need additional instruction in reading.

What does it assess?

DIBELS focuses on five Big Ideas—phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle, accuracy and fluency with connected text, vocabulary and comprehension.

How does the Response to Intervention (RtI) teacher use the DIBELS information?

Once students have been identified, the RtI teachers meets with them 2-3 times each week for thirty minutes and teaches lessons designed to address the specific skills the student needs to achieve fluency in reading.

How do you know when the student has achieved fluency?

Students are monitored every two weeks to track their progress (Progress Monitoring). Once a student reaches their goal, they will no longer receive intervention.
