DuBose is the only school in the tri-county area that has an amateur radio club. K4DMS is licensed by the Federal Communications Commission. Our motto is “Here we use amateur radio to communicate with others in our neighborhood and around the world”. In 2004, DMS had an exclusive contact with the International Space Station. The following school year, K4DMS was started. Most of our radio equipment was obtained through an “Amateur Radio Relay League’s Big School Grant”. The rest of our equipment has been donated by local hams, many of whom are members of the Charleston Amateur Radio Society (C.A.R.S.). C.A.R.S. sponsors K4DMS and maintains a webpage on their site, www.wa4usn.org.
Each year we participate in the Fall and Spring ARRL National School Club Roundup. The School Club Roundup is a competition between schools to see who can make the most contacts with other schools, other clubs and individuals around the US and the world. We have participated for three years and have placed each year. Contest results are published in the ARRL sponsored magazine, QST. The Fall School Club Roundup will occur October 20th through October 23, 2008. The Spring School Club Roundup will be from February 9th through February 12, 2009. During these weeks club members stay after school each day from 4-6:30 to compete.
We have made contacts with many US states, all the Canadian Provinces and many foreign countries including Italy, England, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Costa Rica, Portugal, Russia, Belgium, the Canary Island, the Azores, Jamaica, Netherlands, Panama, South Africa and Spain.
If you are interested in K4DMS come to a meeting on Tuesdays from 4-5:30 in room 303. |
