Welcome to 7th and 8th grade science

Dear Parents / Guardians,

I am thrilled to be your child’s science teacher.   The school year will be filled with many exciting experiences to spark your child’s interest in science.  My primary goal is to develop your child’s understanding of science topics by using many different strategies.  We’ll use technology as often as possible as a learning tool.  Discipline and organization are also important parts of my class, allowing us to concentrate on education and science.  I ask that your child brings a 5-subject spiral notebook, a folder with prongs (pockets optional)  and pencil or pen to class each day.  Your child has been issued a textbook to leave at home (until the end of the school year) plus a textbook to use in class.

How will your child be graded? I use a point system, major assignments are worth more points than minor assignments, but all points go into the same pool for a final grade.  For example if your child gets 20, 17, 20, and 90 points, for a total of 147 points out of a possible 20, 20, 20 and 100 points or a total of 160 points - 147 ÷ 160 =  0.918 x 100  = a grade of 92.

I will do my best to keep you informed of the progress your child makes throughout the year; however, please feel free to contact me for any reason or concern.  I can be reached at school by phone: (843)875-7012 ), but I do NOT check my voicemail regularly.  The BEST way to contact me is via note or email: awilkins@dorchester2.k12.sc.us.  I look forward to working with you and your child throughout the year!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Alene Wilkins
